Breitkopf & Härtel.

Beethoven's concert aria for bass voice and orchestra, Mit Mädeln sich vertragen (Putting up with Girls), WoO 90, is in the Italian opera buffa style. It is skillfully orchestrated and possesses moments of not-so-subtle humor. The text is drawn from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Claudine von Villa Bella and describes how men can fight over women. It is likely that Beethoven composed this and another bass aria, Prüfung des Küssens (The Test of Kissing), WoO 89, for an Electoral court singer, Joseph Lux. The aria was not published during Beethoven's lifetime, and it was first printed in 1888 as part of the complete edition of Beethoven's works published in Leipzig by Breitkopf & Härtel.

Beethoven chose rather limited orchestral forces for Mit Mädeln sich vertragen: two oboes, two horns, and strings. In D major and 6/8 time, Mit Mädeln sich vertragen falls into an ABABA form. In the manner of a folk song, Beethoven repeats both the text and music of the first verse, moving to the dominant the first time and back to the tonic the second while adding woodwinds to the texture. The B section, in which the text recreates the sound of a duel with swords, focuses on the dominant, A major, while the woodwinds echo each of the bass singer's outbursts. After A returns in the same form as at the beginning, B appears again, but on G major and modified in melody and text presentation. The final return of section A is also altered and leads to a coda that combines the texts of the two sections.

Although the orchestration in this aria is simpler than that in Prüfung des Küssens, the former is significantly more adventurous and interesting in terms of harmony and overall structure. The vocal writing is also more expressive.

И. В. Гёте, из трагедии "Клаудина де Вилла Белла"

Mit Mädchen sich vertragen

Mit Mädchen sich vertragen,
mit Männern rumgeschlagen,
und mehr Kredit als Geld:
so kommtt man durch die Welt.

Mit vielem läßt sich schmausen,
mit wenig läßt sich hausen;
daß wenig vieles sei,
schafft nur die Lust herbei.

Will sie sich nicht bequemen,
so müßt ihrs eben nehmen.
Will einer nicht vom Ort,
so jagt ihn grade fort.

Laßt alle nur mißgönnen,
was sie nicht nehmen können,
und seid von Herzen froh;
das ist das A und O.

So fahret fort zu dichten,
euch nach der Welt zu richten.
Bedenkt in Wohl und Weh
dies goldne A B C.
